Brazil: Supposed agreement between Incra and Belo Sun would reduce settlement areas in favour of the mining company's activities

Xingu Vivo

At the beginning of December 2021, the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo reported an alleged agreement between the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) and the Canadian mining company Belo Sun, in which INCRA would reduce a settlement area in favour of the company's "Volta Grande Project", receiving in exchange farms, pickup trucks, notebook tablets and GPS devices. The reduction of 2,428 hectares would affect settlement Ressaca and gleba Ituna, where some 600 families live, in the municipality of Senador José Porfírio (PA).

The residents of the territories claim to have no knowledge of the agreement. According to specialists, the transaction would be illegal, since agrarian reform plots cannot be sold.

The BHRRC invited Belo Sun to comment on the allegations made by Estadão, and the company did so.
