Cambodia: Over 50 construction workers protest over unpaid wages

"Construction workers protest over unpaid wages", 28 January 2020

More than 50 construction workers in Takeo province’s Tram Kak district ... protested in front of the construction site after their manager failed to pay their wages for more than a month.

The workers were building a factory for Outdoor Gear Cambodia in Tram Kak district’s Uddom Soriya commune.

They said the manager promised to pay them ... but failed to do so.

“We did not know what to do. We want relevant authorities to intervene because we, construction workers, are very poor and do not earn enough to support our families,” he said...

Moeng Viriya, chief of Takeo provincial labour department, said ... that labour officials met with workers yesterday. “We came to collect all the details first before we intervene,” Mr Viriya said.

“We do not have monthly wages like garment workers. Our wages are paid weekly and it depends on the manager,” Oun Van, another construction worker added, saying it could be $7 a day.

He said the government should pay attention to construction workers because their jobs are risky and dangerous...

Sou Chholnh, vice president of Building and Wood Worker Trade Union Federation of Cambodia, said ... a lot of construction workers have complained about late payment or not being paid at all...
