Edvaldo Pereira Rocha was murdered by gunmen. Edvaldo was president of the Association of Quilombolas of the Jacarezinho settlement, located in the city of São João do Soter, in the state of Maranhão. Edvaldo was shot eight times by two gunmen on a motorbike on the morning of April 29, at KM 36 on highway MA-127. The quilombola leader had scheduled for the following days a deposition where he would denounce the illegal extraction of wood in the region of Quilombo Jacarezinho. Since the year 2020, this is already the seventh murder of quilombolas only in Maranhão. Although the territory has the quilombola certification issued by the Palmares Foundation and a process of land regularization in the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra) that has been ongoing since 2006, the quilombolas are still waiting for the titling of the land.
