Quilombola leader Haroldo Betcel, was allegedly killed by the local businessman and his son, according to residents of the area (Tiningu, in the municipality of Santarém (PA)). Reports indicate that Haroldo had been in discussion with the landlord because of land conflicts in the region and the recurrent threats that were being made to the quilombolas. The suspected murderers are entrepreneurs who claim to own an area within the quilombo. According to residents, they have been shutting down the community water supply microsystem, which was built by the quilombolas themselves. For the population and local authorities, Haroldo's death is the signaling of the advance of violence in quilombolas territories in the west of Pará and the growing pressure of businessmen and farmers on the territories.
