IGWG on TNCs and other businesses: Day 3, afternoon session, productive dialogue continues

The panel "Enhancing the responsibility of TNCs and other business enterprises to respect human rights, including prevention, mitigation and remediation" started around 3 pm, Geneva time. The positive and productive atmosphere created in the morning, could be upheld and broad agreements could be observed...A majority of states, such as Cuba, South Africa, Bolivia and Ecuador, underlined the need to enhance state as well as enterprise responsibility. The state of Palestine drew specific attention on responsibilities deriving from activities carried out in occupied territories and Ghana urged for a lex specialis dealing with companies operating in conflict zones. Non-governmental organisations such as FIAN international and FIDH, repeatedly emphasized the necessity for enterprises to comply with human rights law as well as the importance to commit to a due diligence process. The importance to include and consult with local, affected communities was echoed by a majority of NGOs...
