Illegal workers from Palestine were employed at Barcelona’s new stadium – contractors face 218 violations
Spanish media report that problems with the renovated Camp Nou continue. Contractors working on Barcelona’s stadium have been fined €2 million.
A special inspection found 218 labour law violations, including unpaid hours, excessive overtime, and even illegal foreign workers.
...77 companies involved in the project, led by the Turkish firm Limak, are under investigation. More than 1,500 workers were or are still working on the renovations.
Inspectors uncovered 16,000 hours of unpaid overtime, workdays exceeding 10 hours, and pressure from supervisors. They also found wages below minimum, missing employment contracts, and dismissals of workers who tried to defend their rights, including employees from Romania and Palestine.
...these workers were hired without contracts or work permits, worked 12-hour shifts seven days a week, earning around €2,000 per month – roughly equivalent to minimum wage after accounting for overtime.
Of the €1.87 million total, about €1.43 million covers correcting violations and unpaid wages or contributions. Another €441,272 consists of fines for more serious offenses, like failing to pay social security or withholding wages.
Main contractor Limak, responsible for project supervision, declined to comment. Barcelona said in a press release that it works closely with Limak to ensure full compliance with labor laws and workers’ rights, although the club did not directly comment on the cases reported in the media...
