Indonesia: CSO calls on cos. to be held accountable after deaths of Indonesian & Chinese workers from electrocution at Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park; incl. cos-responses & non-responses

In June 2025, China Labor Watch reported on worker injuries and deaths at Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), alleging these incidents show companies operating in the park have “fallen short protecting workers”.

The article says that in May 2025, a Chinese migrant worker died after being electrocuted while conducting furnace repairs at Guang Ching Nickel and Stainless Steel Industry (GCNS) in the park. The electrical panel was allegedly not shut off, increasing the risk of electrocution. Two days later, an Indonesian worker employed by ZTE at IMIP died from electrocution while cleaning a dump truck after the area was flooded by rainwater.

The article also says that, in October 2024, a Chinese worker and an Indonesian worker died in safety incidents at Dexin Steel Indonesia. The deaths occurred just one day apart.

In July 2025, the Business & Human Rights Centre (BHRC) invited GCNS and ZTE to respond to the reporting. ZTE responded to the allegations; GCNS did not respond. In January 2026, BHRC also invited Dexin Steel and IMIP to respond to the allegations. Dexin Steel’s response can be read in full below. IMIP did not respond.
