Fuentes

Indigenous Papuan farmer Marius Betera was allegedly assaulted by a police officer in May in Papua, Indonesia. Though he died some two hours later, authorities attribute his death to a heart attack. The incident took place outside the office of a logging and oil palm plantation company PT TSE, subsidiary of the Korindo Group, after Marius arrived to complain about the destruction of his food crops on the disputed land. The alleged assault is deemed to have been recorded by a CCTV camera belonging to the Korindo Group. Indonesian police and the National Commission on Human Rights have cited a post-mortem report to dismiss the possibility that Marius’ death was linked to the assault, but a forensic pathologist reportedly points to a “realistic possibility” of a connection. The investigation of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) found that Korindo was proven not to be involved in the death.
