Massachusetts Institute of Technology announces plan to fight climate change; does not divest from fossil fuels
"MIT announces plan to fight climate change, but without one component activists sought", 22 Oct 2015
MIT President Rafael Reif Wednesday unveiled a broad plan to fight man-made climate change but stopped short of divesting the school's $13.5 billion endowment of investments in fossil fuel companies. The plan calls for:
- Fostering improved understanding of climate change.
- Accelerating progress on low-carbon technologies.
- Creating academic programs that use both traditional and online work to foster study of sustainability.
- Expanding online executive education to include more work around sustainability.
- Reducing carbon emissions on the MIT campus in Cambridge.
As for resisting calls from activists to divest of companies in the fossil fuel sector, the plan states that "well-crafted policies can harness the creative forces of industry to serve the common good.”
