S. Korea: Second subcontracted Coupang delivery worker dead from suspected overwork

[Unofficial Korean-to-English translation provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"Another Coupang subcontracted delivery driver dies in a week...Union 'overwork death likely'", 21 October 2023

A week after a subcontracted Coupang delivery driver died while making late-night deliveries, another Coupang subcontracted delivery driver died yesterday (October 20).

The Delivery Union, affiliated with the Service Workers Federation of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, said that Mr. A, a man in his 40s who was a subcontracted worker, collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage on October 18 and was pronounced dead yesterday (October 20).

The union explained that Mr. A collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage at around 1 p.m. on the 18th and was taken to a hospital but was declared brain dead.

It went on to say that cerebral hemorrhage is a typical overwork disease and argued that given Coupang's structure of work, there was a possibility of overwork death.

[...] On the other hand, Coupang Logistics Services countered that the Delivery Union was unilaterally claiming overwork death without clear evidence.
