USA: Senators introduce bill to clarify extraterritorial application of Alien Tort Statute to ensure companies are held accountable for human rights abuses abroad

In May 2022, two US Senators, Richard Durban and Sherrod Brown, introduced the Alien Tort Statute Clarification Act (ATSCA). The aim of the bill is to clarify the extraterritorial application of the Alien Tort Statute.

"This clarification will ensure that foreign national victims can hold perpetrators within the jurisdiction of the United States accountable for human rights violations that occur abroad", according to the senators.
