Yemen: 3 Filipino seafarers dead and other migrant workers rescued; shipowners and manning agencies warned against deploying workers to Red Sea

"Perils of the sea and seafarers’ safety"

The MV Magic Seas was hit by a missile while traversing the Red Sea on July 6, forcing the crew composed of Filipinos, Vietnamese, and Romanians to abandon ship before it sank.

All 22 crew members of MV Magic Seas, including 17 Filipinos, were rescued. All Filipino crew members are now back in the Philippines...The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that they are in touch with the affected seafarers’ families...

...three Filipino crew members of MV Eternity C have been confirmed dead. The carrier had 22 crew members, 21 of whom were Filipinos and one Russian.

Five other Filipino crew members of MV Eternity C were rescued...the department has reached out to the families of rescued seafarers and has been providing updates and assistance...

…the department has told the shipowners to avoid the area. He reminded Filipino seafarers that they could assert their right to refuse sail and should not be subjected to discrimination when they do so...

...the DMW reiterated its warning to shipowners and licensed manning agencies to refrain from deploying Filipino seafarers aboard vessels transiting the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden...

...shipowners and manning agencies are mandated to report planned passages through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and ensure Filipino crew members are fully informed of the risks involved. Filipino seafarers have the right to refuse to sail in these dangerous zones...
