On October 22, 2023, Arnaldo Benitez Vargas, a spiritual leader from Yvypyte, one of the most important Paî-Tavyterã communities in northeastern Paraguay, was murdered by people working on behalf of the invaders of indigenous lands. This area is under threat due to the expansion of livestock farming and illicit activities related to smuggling. Before this event occurred, members of the community had reported to the authorities the risks they faced due to the presence of land invaders.
