A group of young activists organised a protest against the criminalisation of indigenous farmer Bongku bin Jelodan, who has been jailed for cutting 20 trees on a forest area disputed with the company PT Arara Abadi (AA), a subsidiary of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP). APP is owned by the paper giant Sinar Mas. During the protest, four young people identified as RHS, residents of Bengkalis District, and MHR, MAA and MH, residents of Rupat District, have been reportedly charged by police with violating covid-19 physical distancing measures, for which they could face up to four months in prison.
