On January 18, 2023, Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, also known as Tortuguita, a 26-year-old non-binary environmental activist, was shot and killed by the police in Georgia, USA. They had a least 57 gunshot wounds in their body. An independent autopsy from their family found that Terán's hands were raised during the shooting.

The killing happened during an operation by the police to remove people from the South River Forest who were camping to defend the forest from being razed and turned into a police training facility. A coalition of people has been camping in treehouses since December 2021. The $90 million facility would require tearing down 85 acres of the forest, which serves as a getaway for Atlanta city residents.
