In April 2025, climate activists from the movement Climate Liberation Aotearoa, staged a major protest at Bathurst Resources’ Stockton coal mine on New Zealand’s West Coast, opposing the company’s plans to fast-track a 25-year expansion extracting 20 million tonnes of coal. About 70 protesters camped on the Denniston Plateau, and several disrupted operations by climbing into cable cars used to transport coal. Police arrested at least ten people: seven were charged with trespassing earlier in the week, and another three were detained as the protest ended. The protest directly targeted Bathurst Resources’ business activities and expansion plans.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Bathurst Resources to respond to allegations; it did not.
