Seengar Noonari is a Pakistani grassroots activist who has been engaged in social work and uplifting his community. In 2009, he joined the Awami Workers Party, a political organization that works to promote the rights of workers, peasants, students, women and ethnic and religious minorities. Through that he has been campaigning to improve working conditions and most recently, has been organizing his community to push back against allegedly illegal land grabs by a private property developer. Noonari was abducted late at night on June 26, 2021 while he was busy mobilizing for the AWP’s planned day of action against land-grabbing by the Bahria Town Housing Society in Malir. About 15 armed men reportedly irrupted into his family house at night, seized personal and professional belongings, blindfolded Seengar and abducted him. It is widely believed by his supporters that the opposition to the land grabbing by the private developer is the reason behind his forced abduction.
Previously in 2021, 14 Karachi indigenous villagers & activists were attacked while protesting against house demolition, evictions, and the expansion of the giant luxury estate Bahria Town.
