'Take responsibility', irate NUM tells Harmony Gold [So. Africa]
National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) deputy president Thamsanqa Matosa says they are expecting Harmony Gold Mine to take full responsibility...[for] the fire that broke out and claimed eight lives...at Doornkop mine...He insisted that the union will continue fighting for better working conditions... “...[W]e call for urgent investigation into this and...how [it] can [be]...prevent[ed in future]” Matosa [said]...He also stated that beneficiaries of the deceased are...expect[ing]...support consistent with mining industry norms and standards. “This is very sad,...[we] pass our condolences to the bereaved families... ” said Harmony spokesperson James Duncan. He said the mine “has a good safety record” and that this incident is a first of its kind in [a] Harmony Gold mine.
