On 15 June, Anna Shekalova, an environmental activist was sentenced again to 5 days in prison for "beatings or other violent acts that caused physical pain". The court found Anna guilty of pepper-spraying employees of a private security company. Earlier in June she was sentenced to 5 days for "violating public order" and 5 more days "organizing a gathering near a dangerous facility that created obstacles for the work of construction equipment." Anna and other local residents have been protesting against the construction of a landfill in Arkhangelsk region designed for shipments of garbage from Moscow. Environmental activists say the shipments will include highly hazardous waste and food that will decompose without oxygen and will emit toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. The released gases will allegedly poison the atmosphere for many kilometers in all directions and toxic filtrates will enter the regions’ water supply. The inhabitants of the nearby villages of Madmas and Urdoma will be the first to suffer.
