On 25 March 2019, Eulodia Lilia Diaz Ortiz of Consejo Indígena de Trueque (CIT) was killed by one gunshot to the head. She was an Indigenous Peoples rights and land defender. Her son and daughter in law witnessed the assassination. One witness stated that an official representative from a new municipal administrative system that sought to represent the Indigenous Peoples council shot Eulodia. Eulodia was trying to protect the autonomous indigenous administration of the “Tianguis del Trueque”, which is a cultural practice of local indigenous Otomi, Tlahuica and Nahua peoples. The municipality wanted to administer the Tianguis as it attracts tourism. The CIT was resisting the municipality attempts to control the Tianguis. CIT members suffered physical attacks, harassment, criminalization, and arrest and have been denouncing the attacks they have been subjected to for years.
