Jani Silva is a defender of the environment, peace and human rights in Colombia, and has opposed oil exploitation in the area. She is the legal representative of the Association for the Integral Sustainable Development of the Perla Amazónica (ADISPA), a community organization that protects the rights of the communities living in the Perla Amazónica Peasant Reserve Zone. On Saturday April 24, 2021, a head of the Border Command (a criminal armed group), alias "Leonel", ordered that Jani be killed and ADISPA eliminated. Some organizations point out that the threats may be related to her opposition to oil exploitation by Amerisur (now Geopark).

This is not the first threat that Jani receives. Among others, she was threatened in 2020 in relation to her opposition to the oil exploitation.
