In East Kazakhstan region, mine waste was discharged into the river, 23 April 2024

...The prosecutor's office, together with authorised government agencies, independent experts and Vostoktsvetmet LLP, conducted a commission inspection of the mine.

During the inspection, numerous places of self-flow were discovered, from which water seeps. It flows into a stream flowing through the territory of the mine, and then flows into the Malaya Karaguzhikha, Karaguzhikha and Uba rivers.

Laboratory studies conducted by the Department of Ecology for East Kazakhstan region confirmed that the content of heavy metals (zinc, cadmium, iron, manganese, etc.) in the water was up to 83 thousand times higher than the permissible standards.

It was also established that the reclamation of the mine territory was not carried out properly.

In connection with the violations identified, the specialized environmental prosecutor's office of the East Kazakhstan region filed a claim with the specialized inter-district economic court of Astana to declare the act of liquidation of the mine illegal.

On April 17, the court satisfied the claim in this part.

After the court's decision comes into legal force, the issue of the enterprise's liability will be resolved within the framework of the current legislation.
