On 27 July, Mario Luna Romero's partner's car was set on fire outside their home. Romero, an indigenous leader & land rights defender involved in the campaign against Acueducto Independencia, received threats and an arrest warrant by state prosecutors. He is the Secretary of the traditional authorities of the Vicam town of the Yaqui tribe in Sonora. The human rights defender is also the spokesperson for the Yaqui tribe and others, defending their rights in the context of the construction and operation of the Independence Aqueduct.
