Peru: Miners' union federation rejects "acts of violence against mine workers" by communities who seized Las Bambas headquarters

[Translated by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"Las Bambas: FNTMMSP condemns acts of violence against mine workers" - 18 May 2022

"Challhuahuacho could become a ghost town if Las Bambas does not operate," they warned... "Aníbal Torres and President Castillo show no interest in resolving the conflict," said Juan Carlos Huamán, Disciplinary Secretary of the Las Bambas workers' union... The National Federation of Mining, Metal and Steel Workers of Peru (FNTMMSP) condemned the acts of violence against the Las Bambas mine workers...Through their social networks, they regretted that the mining operation has been paralysed for 30 days without any results from the different actions taken by the Executive... "In this problem that has been going on, the mining business should not be a stranger and is not at all a victim as some of the media are trying to portray it," they said.... On the contrary, they continued, "it should be supervised in general in an intensive programme of "impact studies" with respect to its own "environmental impact studies" where they clearly include extensive chapters on "Sustainability and Development" or other purposes on the communities and areas of influence of the mining operation, which translated into simple language should mean "the progress and sustainable development of the communities and areas of mining influence in businesses and work that do not articulate anything with the mining operation".
