Spain: Govt. announces "crackdown" on holiday lettings on platforms incl. Airbnb & Booking.com amid alleged contribution to housing crises; incl. co. comment
In July 2024, Reuters reported that the Spanish government had announced a “crackdown” on short-term and seasonal holiday lettings, amid alleged increasing house prices.
In particular, the government said it would investigate listings on platforms including Airbnb and Bookimg.com to verify if they have licenses for tourism. Neither company responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
In May 2025, Reuters reported that the government had ordered Airbnb to withdraw over 65,000 listings for holiday rentals; this comes amid blame on the business to the housing crisis. Airbnb will appeal the decision and said it believes the ministry does not have authority to make the ruling.
