On 28 May 2024, Yoan Esteban Mazo Posada, a human rights defender and member of the Rios Vivos Movement in Colombia, survived an assassination attempt. Mazo Posada has been an active advocate for social justice and the rights of marginalized communities, particularly in relation to the impacts of the Hidroituango hydroelectric project run by Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM). The Rios Vivos Movement comprises 15 grassroots organizations representing various sectors affected by the project, including women, youth, farmers, and fishermen. This movement has raised concerns about forced displacements, inadequate compensation, and negative health and environmental impacts stemming from the mega project.

The assassination attempt occurred when Mazo Posada was traveling from Briceño to Medellín, where he was shot by armed men allegedly affiliated with the illegal armed group Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC). He suffered serious injuries, including a spinal fracture, and faced a delay in receiving medical attention due to fear of retaliation from the attackers.
