"Chinese Worker Killed by Hot Nickel Dust Eruption at BTIIG", Qiandao ribao, August 23, 2024

On August 21 (…), a 40-year-old Chinese worker named Shi Xiaomian died after being struck by hot nickel dust while working at Baoshuo Industrial Investment Group (BTIIG). The incident also caused severe burns to his colleague Sakkaria (32).

Agus Salim, head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Morowali District Police Station, stated that Shi Xiaomian and Sakkaria were initially measuring H-shaped steel beams in the area of the No. 7 nickel-iron furnace. When Sakkaria felt intense heat, he immediately moved away from the location. Shi Xiaomian remained at the site. A torrent of scorching nickel dust then erupted from the exhaust pipe, striking both. Sakkaria was transported to Wosu Social Security Center, while Shi Xiaomian was taken to Morowali Regional Public Hospital. The incident resulted in burns covering 18% of Sakkaria's skin. However, Shi Xiaomian sustained burns over 90% of his body and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Cipto Rustianto, Manager of External Affairs at the Baoshuo Industrial Investment Group in Morowali District, expressed deep condolences over the accident that claimed the life of a worker.
