[New York Climate Week] Accelerating Responsible & Reliable Renewable Energy: Launch of the 2025 Renewable Energy & Human Rights Benchmark

Staying the course on renewable energy deployment and investment has never been more urgent to meet climate and energy goals. Amidst political and financial headwinds for renewable energy, shared prosperity, rightsholder-centred project deployment and responsible mineral sourcing are critical to support secure, resilient and reliable critical minerals supply chains and renewable energy project roll-out sustaining a fast and just transition to a net zero economy.

The fourth edition of the Resource Centre's Renewable Energy & Human Rights Benchmark (to be published on 16 September 2025) reveals trends, progress and emerging leadership as well as areas for improvement for the world’s biggest wind and solar project developers and equipment manufacturers.

Leaders in the sector are starting to address human rights challenges head-on including through adopting innovative approaches and policies to support benefit-sharing, strengthening human rights due diligence processes, committing to respecting rights of human rights defenders and Indigenous Peoples, identifying and disclosing risks in critical minerals in supply chains, and looking beyond compliance including on engagement processes. Yet, most companies continue to lag behind – risking social conflicts and opposition, slowing the swift deployment of renewable energy projects the world needs to see.

This two hour event will profile emerging leadership, provide examples and evidence to propel more companies, investors and policymakers to step up to the challenge to secure a future energy system that is responsible, resilient and reliable.
