Land rights defender Ayanda Ngila, a leader of the Abahlali baseMjondolo movement in South Africa, was shot and killed on 8 March 2022, allegedly by gunmen affiliated to powerful businessmen and the local ANC party. His killing appears to be part of a pattern of ongoing attacks on the community and its members. The eKhenana settlement has been facing attempts at forcible evictions and its leaders have been facing ongoing attacks. According to ABM, after the organisation successfully interdicted the municipality from evicting 109 families, the party started working with a well-known family in the taxi business to intimidate people with the aim to vacate the land to make way to build flats.
