Safeguarding public participation: Tackling business-related SLAPPs through judicial action
UNDP is inviting applications from experienced legal professionals across Asia to join a specialized legal workshop in Kuala Lumpur on 3-4 June 2025, focused on business-related SLAPPs (strategic lawsuits against public participation) and practical legal strategies to protect civic space and strengthen corporate accountability.
This hands-on workshop will bring together a small group of senior lawyers and judges who are actively engaged in defending public interest advocates, journalists, and communities facing judicial harassment.
Organized by:
UNDP, in partnership with Leigh Day, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Government of Malaysia, and with support from the Government of Sweden, US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, and ACROL (Anti-Corruption & Rule of Law in South Asia).
Workshop highlights:
- Examine trends and strategies behind business-related SLAPPs in Asia
- Learn practical tools for identifying and dismissing SLAPPs
- Participate in courtroom simulations with senior judges
- Co-develop legal recommendations to better safeguard public participation
Eligibility criteria:
- 7+ years of post-qualification experience in Asia
- Demonstrated experience advising or litigating on public interest or SLAPP-related cases
- Working proficiency in English
