Japan: Tokyo Electric (TEPCO) turns down recommended settlement

[English summary of Japanese original provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre] TEPCO refused to accept the recommended settlement for 15,000 residents of Namie-machi, a town in the Prefecture of Fukushima whose residents all remain evacuated. An increase in monthly compensation had been recommended by the Nuclear Damage Compensation Dispute Resolution Centre, the official dispute resolution mechanism established to process claims pursuant to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011. The recommendation was to increase the monthly compensation from JPY 100,000 (approximately USD 1000) to JPY 150,000 (approximately USD 1500) per claimaint. The sum of JPY 100,000 was indicated in the national guidelines for compensation for the accident, and is based on the minimum compensation for traffic accidents. Now that TEPCO has refused to accept the settlement, the claimants have no further avenue but to take the matter to court.
