Australia: Govt. publishes National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery 2020–25

This National Action Plan provides the strategic framework for Australia’s response to modern slavery from 2020 to 2025. It builds on the achievement of past plans, including the 2004 Action Plan to Eradicate Trafficking in Persons and the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking and Slavery 2015–19.

- The National Action Plan is underpinned by nine principles that will guide our work to implement the five National Strategic Priorities.
- Australia responds to modern slavery in a manner that is comprehensive, effective, timely, coordinated and consistent with our international obligations.
- Australia addresses the unique needs of women and children, who are disproportionately affected by modern slavery.
- Australia maintains a strong deterrence framework which promotes investigations, prosecutions and the enforcement of civil sanctions, and penalises offenders to the full extent of the law.
- Australia provides holistic, gender-sensitive, culturally-responsive, trauma-informed, victim-centred protection and support to all victims and survivors of modern slavery.
- Australia affords victims and survivors of modern slavery access to effective remedies. 1 2 3 4 5 20 Australia promotes a collaborative response that is built on the participation of victims and survivors of modern slavery, government, civil society, business, unions, academia and the broader community working in partnership to prevent and combat modern slavery.
- Australia strives to be an international and regional leader and partner in deterring and combating modern slavery, and works cooperatively with other governments both internationally and regionally towards this end.
- Australia promotes an evidence-based response to modern slavery, and its root causes and drivers, to build our understanding of modern slavery and how to prevent it.
- Australia ensures the voices of victims and survivors, particularly women and children, inform our responses to modern slavery.
