Bolivia: Indigenous communities allege that Chinese companies of hydroelectric project entered their lands without their authorisation

A group of Asian citizens, accompanied by staff of the ENDE Guaracachi company that carries out outreach activities about the Rositas hydroelectric project, entered without authorization to the private lands of the Moroco Lajitas community, in which the dam will be built, according to a community leader and owner of the third plot that will be affected by the hydroelectric dam…[He] considers that [the company] was seeking information to calculate the coordinates and analyse the required materials to build the dam, without having concluded the information stage with the impacted communities…He added that the foreigners would be representing the Rositas Accidental Association (AAR for its Spanish acronym), a consortium made of three Chinese companies that will be responsible for the construction of the project… Contradicting this position, the Ende Guarachi’s Operational Technical CEO for socio-environmental management, María Ramos, informed that the company team did not enter these community plots… “We inform that the entrance by the Rositas Accidental Association to the areas of possible intervention of the Rositas project is always done with the respective accompaniment and supervision” …[Besides] she said that during 2017 they undertook over 165 informational meetings and workshops with local authorities, community members, indigenous peoples and social organizations.  However, she mentioned that there are still difficulties in the Arenales, Vado del Yeso and Lajas Toco communities, located in the Vallegrande province of the Santa Cruz department….
