According to a 2017 report by Plan International, Chinese banana plantations in Bokeo province, northern Laos, provide US$100 million in annual exports and make up 95% of Bokeo's exports.

While these banana plantations have created job opportunities for the locals, the working conditions of these workers are dangerous.For example, workers' accomodation is very congested and no toilets or showers are provided. Children under 16 are also found working on the plantations, Some workers said that they seem to have been poisoned by chemicals while working. 

Besides, it has been reported that these banana plantations are associated with pollution and the release of chemicals into rivers and creeks.
