Lebanon: Toters delivery workers strike to demand fair wages; incl. co. comment
In February 2023, delivery workers for Toters, a Lebanese mobile app that connects customers with food and groceries, went on partial strike to protest low wages. This has been of particular concern in light of the cost of living crisis and continuing collapse of the lira, as fuel costs (which workers must bear themselves) soar. Workers also reportedly complained of a lack of work benefits such as medical coverage. Drivers are considered independent contractors, rather than company employees.
The strike ended after the company increased workers' pre-trip payments. Toters commented via Twitter that driver earnings are updated in line with market changes.
The working conditions are terrible and we tell [Toters] but they don’t seem to care. Our drivers are regularly getting mugged at knife and gunpoint. The fleet manages just tell us not to wear Toters clothing so robbers don’t think we’re delivery carrying cash.Toters delivery driver, speaking on condition of anonymity
