LG denies its smart TVs secretly record users, but questions remain over its data collection and profiling practices, according to experts

申立

A video report by Gamers Nexus alleges that LG smart TVs were collecting audio recordings and extensive user data, including viewing activity, information about connected devices, location data and nearby wireless networks.

LG has denied the allegations. The company says its TVs process voice data only when users activate voice controls and do not otherwise record ambient conversations. It says network scanning is used to provide smart TV functionality by identifying and connecting to nearby devices. LG also says its Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) feature, which tracks viewing activity, is opt-in and that ACR data is not used for advertising where users have not consented.

However, privacy experts say LG’s response leaves wider questions unanswered, including whether users fully understand or expect the extent of the data collection and profiling to which they consent. They also point out that LG’s statement does not make clear whether certain data may still be collected or processed for purposes other than advertising where advertising consent has not been given. Experts have called for greater clarity over what data is collected, retained and transmitted, and the purposes for which it is used.
