On March 6 2017, the trial re-opened against 16 community leaders opposed to the mining mega-project Conga, after the 2nd Provincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office of Celendín filed an indictment in which a sentence of up to 36 years in prison is sought, as well as the payment of a file of ten thousand soles by each accused. Among the accused is the environmental leader Milton Sánchez Cubas, secretary general of the Plataforma Interinstitucional Celendina (PIC), who was a beneficiary of precautionary measures granted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) because of various threats to his life and personal integrity. The trial is allegedly a result of the struggle of the local communities against the mining company Yanacocha, owned by Newmont Mining Corporation, Buenaventura and the International Finance Corporation. According to the Latin America Solidarity Centre, Sánchez has faced some 50 court proceedings but has never been convicted.
