Twitter: CSO raises concerns over user safety after social media platform removes transgender protection policy

In April 2023, the civil society organization, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), discovered that Twitter removed from its Content Guidelines a policy that prohibited the targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals. This policy was in place since 2018 and provided specific protection for transgender users on the social media platform.

GLAAD criticized Twitter's revised policy as a step back on transgender people's protections and raised concerns about safety for its users.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Twitter to respond to the allegations. Twitter did not respond.
