An introduction
Each year the Mary Robinson Speaker Series spotlights emerging issues in the field of business and human rights. It looks to move forward the debate by bringing together people from business, investment, legislative and human rights communities, as well as voices speaking on behalf of those most impacted by egregious human rights abuse.
Big Tech vs. the public good: how human rights can detoxify tech
The 2025 Mary Robinson Speaker Series event focused on the fast-emerging systemic dangers that current approaches by the tech sector pose for democracy and human rights around the world, considering what a positive future could look like for the tech sector, particularly the powerful role that smart regulation can play in ensuring that the opportunity of tech for public good becomes a reality. Our expert panel of rightsholder, regulator, and private sector voices identified the urgent steps needed to arrest the ongoing deterioration of protections for people and democracy in the digital age, and propose the vital solutions needed to drive fairness, uphold rights and re-orientate the tech sector toward the public good. Speakers highlighted the role of smart regulation, spotlighting grassroots and frontline perspectives, and looked at the Resource Centre evidence base to highlight both rising abuse (including of human rights defenders challenging corporate violations) and the opportunity for better practice.
