Human rights defender Cirio Ruiz González was arbitrarily detained by the Ministerial Police in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, after being accused by the company Agro Industrias Unidas de México (AMSA) of being allegedly responsible for a fire in one of the company's warehouses in January 2022, during a protest in which coffee growers were denouncing unfair prices in the coffee trade. Ruiz González is president of the Regional Coffee Council of Coatepec, in Veracruz, Mexico. He has been working as a coffee grower leader for more than 40 years and has advocated for fair trade and fair prices for quality coffee to support respect for the labour rights of coffee growers. On May 31, in a court hearing in Huatusco Veracruz, the judge did not accept the evidence presented by Cirio Ruiz Gonzalez proving that he was elsewhere at the time of the fire. The judge ordered that all the accused workers be remanded in custody and sentenced to trial, without even hearing the witnesses who had come forward.
