A district court in Indonesia Tuesday cleared PT Newmont Minahasa Raya of any wrongdoing in a lawsuit filed by an environmental group earlier this year. "The witnesses for the prosecution cannot be certain that (the alleged environmental damage) was caused by tailings from Newmont,"...the leading judge in the case, told the court... The South Jakarta district court, however, denied Newmont's request for Walhi to pay compensation for damages caused by what the company considered defamation. Following the verdict, Walhi representatives told the court the organization would appeal the ruling.
