On May 25, 2018, police arrested two activists during a peaceful protest in Lamu town, Kenya. The activists, staff of the environmental groups, Save Lamu and Lamu Youth Alliance, were protesting the government’s decision to proceed with construction of a power plant despite environmental and health concerns. In 2016, the Kenya government awarded a concession to Amu Power Ltd., a joint venture company led by Kenyan companies Gulf Energy Limited and Centum Investment Company Ltd., and joined by Chinese company, Power Construction Corporation, among others. Police held the men at Lamu police station for six hours for participating in an “illegal assembly.” They were not charged. Amu Power, through their lawyer, responded to the Human Rights Watch report about this and other incidents, through a letter dated December 10 2018 (link is available below).
