On 14 June 2023, five union leaders - Ma Aung Aung, Ma Thandar Aye, Ma Ayr Thandar Htay, Ma May Thu Min and Ma Thu Thu San - at Hosheng Myanmar Garment Factory in Yangon that supplies global brand Zara were arrested by the military council after leading a protest for a pay rise of 800 kyats (38 US cents) a day.

These five leaders and two others were dismissed from their jobs just days before on 10 June for calling for this increase in the daily wage. On 12 and 13 June 12, more than 600 workers at the Hosheng Myanmar Garment Factory protested the firing of their union’s executive committee. On 13 June, officials and military officers visited the factory and told the striking workers that they could negotiate with factory management at the township General Administration Department office. The following day, union leader Ma Thu Thu San was arrested after she and other union leaders met with their employer’s representative to settle the dispute at the GAD office and the four other leaders were arrested soon after.

Zara’s owner, Inditex, announced that it will stop buying from Hosheng Myanmar Garment. Inditex had “blocked suppliers from working with this factory [and it is] working on a gradual and responsible exit from Myanmar... The events that have occurred in this factory in recent days represent a serious breach of our Code of Conduct for manufacturers and suppliers,” the company stated.
