Sister Patricia Fox was a lay missionary of the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion. As a foreign missionary, she has devoted her life working with the peasants and the most vulnerable sectors to help improve their lives. She was detained by the Bureau of Immigration upon orders of President Duterte for alleged “disorderly conduct.” In a press briefing, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque showed a government photo that he said was taken on April 9 at a rally in front of Coca-Cola’s Davao City Distribution Center. She attended a demonstration of locked-out workers at the Coca Cola factory in the southern city of Davao. The Coca Cola workers had been employed on contracts for years, with long hours, poor pay and no job security. They formed a union only to find themselves summarily sacked. A picket line was violently broken up by police. Immigration agents detained Fox, a longtime missionary and human rights advocate, for supposedly joining partisan political activities. Fox’s supporters, who claim to have seen her work, question where the allegations against her came from.
