UK: FCO cleaners outsourced to Interserve strike as low wages and payroll change leaves workers relying on food banks
Cleaners employed by outsourcing firm Interserve to work at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office have gone on strike in protest over low wages. Low wages and a change in payroll date has left workers in a situation of financial precarity, with many relying on food banks. The workers allege that Interserve managers do not recognise their organising through the PCS union. The workers have called on Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to intervene and to ultimately bring their contracts in house. Interserve disputed the workers’ claimed grounds for strike.
