Argentina: UN special procedures draw attention to serious environmental damage at Barrick Gold and Shandong Gold's Veladero mine

Greenpeace

Three independent experts, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, produced a report on Barrick Gold's contamination and violation of laws at its Veladero mine in San Juan. The three experts wrote to Toronto-based Barrick Gold, the Canadian government, and other parties concerned. They expressed concerns over the spills of hazardous substances at the mine co-developed by Barrick Gold and Shandong Gold in Argentina's Veladero mine. In its reply, Barrick Gold denied all allegations. The representatives of Canada and China in Geneva have also responded to the incident.
