DA seeks probe of MTN Iran bugging claims [So. Africa]

Papers before a US court indicate that MTN’s Iranian subsidiary could have helped Iran’s intelligence structures to bug the phones of the political opposition in that country, prompting a call from the Democratic Alliance (DA) for an investigation by the South African Human Rights Commission. This comes after a lawsuit brought against the MTN Group in the District Court of Columbia in Washington DC, in which rival Turkcell alleged that MTN engaged in bribery and influence trading to secure an operating licence in Iran...Asked for comment, MTN spokesman Xolisa Vapi said the company was not commenting further on the allegations, which were before a court.
