DR Congo: Widespread use of child labour in small-scale cobalt mines, report finds

"Damning Report Documents How Small-Scale Chinese Cobalt Miners in the DR Congo Use Child Labor" 3 May 2022

The popular Congolese news site Actualites.CD published an in-depth report by Lumbubashi-based journalist Anto Mulanga that details the widespread use of child labor in small-scale mines in the southeastern cobalt mining belt.

While the report is not exclusively focused on how independent small-scale Chinese miners engage in this horrific practice, it's nonetheless a prominent theme in Mulanga's reporting.

The story is notable for a couple of reasons: Actualities.CD is not known for this kind of high-quality long-form journalism, especially that is openly critical of Chinese mining interests in the DRC given that the site has been among the major platforms for Chinese corporate propaganda.
