India: Deadliest train crash in decades kills almost 300, mostly migrant workers

A devastating crash involving three trains in Balasore, Odisha has killed 275 people and injured more than 1,000. A majority of the passengers declared dead were migrant workers.

Following the crash, West Bengal Migrant Workers Union demanded a judicial probe on the derailment, including the identification of those killed who traveled in the unreserved compartment of the train, jobs for the family members of the migrant worker causalities, and improved compensation packages for the families.

Migrant workers also experienced lost wages following the crash and health costs amid a lack of insurance from employers or the government.
