India: Internal migrants constructing highways in Kerela subjected to alleged safety violations, including multiple deaths following landslides; incl. cos. non-response

An article published in Onmanorama highlights occupational heath and safety violations experienced by internal migrant workers constructing highways in Kerela.

The article describes the death of a migrant worker from Jharkhand in May 2025, who was buried in a landslide following heavy rain.

The worker was constructing the Taliparamba-Muzhappilangad stretch of the NH-66 highway, which is allegedly being developed by Vishwa Samudra Engineering. Construction at the site allegedly continued despite the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for heavy rainfall.

The article also describes the death of another worker from West Bengal, who died two weeks prior to the worker from Jharkhand in a landslide. Reporting does not name this worker's employer.

In June 2025, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Vishwa Samudra Engineering to respond to the article. The company did not respond.
